Translate the environment into measurable requirements
Start with saltwater exposure, abrasive debris, expected contact damage and the period for which the rod remains extended. Parker describes hard chrome, nickel chrome, ceramic and laser-clad options for different service conditions and evaluates coatings through corrosion and wear tests. Those test results apply to the tested coating and substrate, not to every supplier’s material with the same generic name. The rod finish and coating integrity must also suit the selected seal.

- Ask for substrate, coating process, thickness and finished surface specification.
- Check resistance to impact or local damage as well as salt-spray performance.

Treating a salt-spray hour number as a service-life promise ignores rod motion, damage, seals and maintenance. Equally, a corrosion-resistant coating does not correct side loading or poor alignment.
