A high filter differential-pressure indication on a cold morning does not always mean the element is loaded with dirt. Cold hydraulic oil can be much more viscous, increasing resistance through the same clean media. Ignoring the alarm is also unwise because bypass may open.<\/p>\n

Why the same element reads differently cold<\/h2>\n

Oil viscosity generally rises as temperature falls. Flow through a porous filter then requires a larger pressure difference, even when the element has not collected more dirt. An indicator that trips on a cold start may reset once the oil warms. But it is unsafe to dismiss every cold alarm: the filter might already be loaded, and the extra viscosity may push the assembly into bypass. The operator needs both temperature and differential-pressure information to interpret the event.<\/p>\n

Parker\u2019s filtration handbook calls for sizing at maximum flow and operating viscosity, and specifically notes low-temperature pressure-drop increases. Diagnose the indication by recording oil temperature, flow and differential pressure during controlled warm-up, then compare with the filter manufacturer\u2019s curves. A persistent high reading at normal temperature points toward element loading, a wrong element or another restriction. The alarm setpoint and bypass setting must come from the actual housing data; a generic number should not be copied between machines.<\/p>\n

Separate three possibilities<\/h2>\n

First, compare the reading at similar flow before and after warm-up. If it falls substantially with temperature, viscosity is contributing. Second, compare the warm reading with the clean-element curve; a persistently high value suggests dirt loading, a wrong element or a restriction. Third, inspect whether the bypass setting was reached during the cold peak. Parker\u2019s handbook calls for sizing at the maximum flow and cold viscosity rather than only the comfortable steady-state point.<\/p>\n

A winter start example<\/h2>\n

An outdoor HPU starts near freezing and its filter warning activates for a few minutes, then clears. That pattern suggests viscosity contributes, but it does not prove the element is clean. Capture differential pressure, temperature and flow on a new element and again after service hours. If the warm operating value has also climbed, dirt loading is likely. If cold pressure exceeds bypass every morning even with a clean element, the design may need a warm-up sequence or larger housing. The response should be based on the selected filter\u2019s curves, not a general rule about cold weather.<\/p>\n

Changes should address the cause<\/h2>\n

Possible responses include a controlled warm-up sequence, a larger housing, a different approved element or a fluid grade that stays within every component\u2019s viscosity limit. Simply raising an alarm setpoint can hide a real bypass event. Document the filter model, clean baseline, oil grade and typical warm operating differential pressure. This gives technicians a reference for deciding whether the next cold-start indication is normal for this system or a maintenance problem.<\/p>\n
