Marine Hydraulic Cylinder Corrosion Protection: What to Specify

Marine cylinder protection starts with the actual exposure and operating cycle. A cylinder on an open deck may see salt spray and washdown, while one in a protected machinery space faces a different maintenance environment. The drawing and purchase specification should state these conditions before a coating or seal is chosen.

Describe the exposure zone

Tell the supplier whether the cylinder is indoors, on deck, in a splash zone or submerged. Note seawater contact, cleaning chemicals, ambient temperature, ultraviolet exposure and storage conditions before commissioning. Include the expected inspection and maintenance interval. Do not rely on the word “marine” as a complete environmental specification.

Specify rod and external surface protection

The piston rod’s exposed length, surface finish and protective treatment affect corrosion and seal wear. State any project requirement for hard chrome, ceramic coating or another treatment, along with the associated inspection method. For a replacement cylinder, provide photos of existing corrosion or pitting and the operating history so the new design addresses the observed failure mode.

Match seals and fluid to the duty

Provide the hydraulic fluid type, pressure range, temperature, speed, dwell time and cycle frequency. These inputs guide seal material and geometry selection. Describe whether the rod stays extended for long periods, because exposed surface and parked position can change the corrosion risk. Confirm compatibility with any fire-resistant fluid or special medium before ordering.

Protect connections and plan maintenance

Show port orientation, hoses, fittings, drains, vents and nearby structures on the installation drawing. Ask how the cylinder can be inspected, removed and resealed safely. Protective paint on the barrel alone cannot compensate for inaccessible connections or trapped seawater.

Define evidence and acceptance criteria

Agree on dimensional inspection, coating records, pressure and leakage tests, functional checks and preservation for shipment. If a salt-spray or other corrosion test is required, name the standard, duration and pass criteria in the contract; no single test proves a universal service life.
