Shiploader Hydraulic Power Unit Retrofit: A Planning Checklist
Plan a shiploader HPU replacement with a site survey, interface review, installation sequence, testing plan and handover documents.

Replacing a shiploader hydraulic power unit is a system integration project. The existing pumps, control logic, pipework, electrical supply and installation space all affect the replacement. A clear survey and cutover plan help the engineering team define scope before equipment is manufactured.

Survey the equipment before design

Record the current hydraulic schematic, pressure and flow requirements, actuator functions, operating sequence, power supply, controls and alarms. Inspect the condition and routing of pipework and cables. Measure access routes, lifting points, foundation, enclosure and available service space. Photograph interfaces and label each connection.

Identify operating constraints

Establish which functions must remain available during installation and when the port can release the equipment for cutover. The outage window, vessel schedule and safety procedures should be agreed by the operator. Consider temporary protection of exposed ports and components during removal; any temporary system must be engineered and approved for its intended duty.

Design the interfaces, not only the HPU

The replacement package should address pump and valve selection, reservoir, filtration, cooling, instrumentation, electrical controls and the interfaces to the existing machine. Check start-up and shutdown sequences, emergency stops, interlocks, feedback signals and fault reporting. Define what the supplier will manufacture and what the site team must modify.

Plan factory and site acceptance

Agree on inspection points and factory tests for pressure, flow, leakage, control response and documentation. On site, use a commissioning checklist that covers flushing and cleanliness, electrical checks, sensor calibration, functional trials and operator training. Acceptance values should come from the approved project specification.

One published Yongjian project

Yongjian’s shiploader gantry HPU replacement case describes a port client’s aging hydraulic and control system in an elevated 20-foot container and the need to maintain loading operations until replacement. This case illustrates the importance of access, enclosure design and installation planning; its configuration should not be copied into a different port without review.
