Hydraulic Cylinder Rod-End Connections: Threads, Clevises and Load Path
Specify rod-end threads and clevis connections from the real load path, articulation and repair requirements.

The rod-end connection transfers actuator force into the machine. A strong cylinder body does not protect a weak thread, poorly seated shoulder or misaligned clevis. The joint should be reviewed at the same time as the cylinder mounting, not treated as an interchangeable accessory.

The thread is not the whole joint

A threaded rod end should seat against a defined shoulder or other approved face so load is transferred as the designer intended. The tensile area at the thread root is smaller than the nominal rod area. Under compression, poor face contact or an off-axis attachment can introduce bending at the first engaged thread. That local stress may be more important than the gross cylinder push-force calculation. The mating component, locknut and retention feature must be considered together, including their materials and surface finish.

Begin with maximum push and pull load, any bending moment from the linkage, and the full articulation angle. A threaded rod end needs an approved engagement and retention method; a clevis needs an appropriate pin and bearing arrangement. Parker’s cylinder engineering guidance differentiates rod-end styles by strength and application. Those recommendations are series-specific, so a replacement joint must follow the original drawing or a new approved calculation. Confirm installation torque and the method used to prevent rotation or loosening without damaging the rod surface.

Choose the connection from motion, not convenience

A fixed threaded connection can be appropriate when the machine constrains the moving member to a straight line. A clevis or spherical joint allows rotation, but it still has limits on angle, pin load and bearing clearance. Sketch the linkage at the start, midpoint and end of travel. If the attachment rotates beyond the joint’s freedom, the rod becomes a bending member. In a replacement job, record the existing engagement length, shoulder, thread hand and retention method before ordering a “matching” rod. Similar-looking ends can differ in strength and installation procedure.

A replacement-joint example

A maintenance team may find that a new cylinder has the correct stroke and an apparently matching threaded rod end, yet the clevis sits several millimeters farther from the shoulder. The resulting pin-to-pin length changes the linkage geometry and can make the cylinder bottom before the machine reaches its intended stop. Compare shoulder-to-pin distance, thread engagement and locked nut position in addition to the nominal thread designation. If the old joint showed a fatigue crack at the first thread, ask whether bending from misalignment was present before simply increasing thread diameter. A strong part in a poor load path remains a weak connection.

What a useful drawing shows

The approved drawing should show the thread designation and tolerance, shoulder diameter, engagement, joint stack-up, pin or nut retention and any required assembly torque. Add the maximum push and pull loads and identify any known shock case. During commissioning, inspect for loosening and one-sided bearing marks after a controlled loaded cycle. Do not grip a finished rod surface with an unprotected tool to achieve installation torque; use the assembly method specified for the particular cylinder.

Checks to put on the drawing or test plan

  • Trace the force through shoulder, thread, clevis, pin and machine bracket.
  • Check joint clearance at both stroke ends and at the worst articulation angle.
  • Record thread size, fit and retention details on the approved drawing.

Failure mode to avoid: Matching only the thread diameter can hide a different shoulder, engagement length or material grade.

Information to request before approval

  • Original cylinder and machine-interface drawings.
  • Compression and tension load cases.
  • Assembly, locking and inspection requirements.
