A hydraulic cylinder seal is a system component, not simply a rubber ring. The piston seal, rod seal, buffer, wiper, wear rings and static seals perform different jobs. Selecting a material by its name alone can overlook chemical compatibility, the cold-start temperature or the heat generated at a moving interface.
Start with the actual fluid
Identify the exact hydraulic fluid and any fire-resistant or biodegradable alternatives that might be used later. Seal materials can react differently to mineral oil, water-based fluids and phosphate esters. Parker’s sealing guidance lists fluid type and temperature as primary selection factors and shows different seal classes for different fluids. A material suitable for one member of a broad “hydraulic fluid” category should not be assumed suitable for another.
Specify the full temperature range
Include ambient minimum, cold starting, continuous oil temperature and short peaks. A seal must remain functional at the lowest expected temperature and resist degradation at the hottest contact point. The fluid may be warmer at a throttled or high-speed seal interface than a sensor reading in the reservoir suggests. Request the supplier’s approved temperature range for the exact seal compound, not a generic polymer family.
Motion and pressure matter too
Rod speed, cycle frequency, pressure reversal, pressure spikes, extrusion gap, rod finish and side load affect sealing performance. A wiper must keep grit and moisture away from the rod seal. A wear ring should support lateral load within its design limits, but it cannot correct a severely misaligned machine. The seal supplier may need a different lip profile or backup arrangement for a demanding cycle even if the base material remains the same.
Practical seal specification
- List all fluids and their concentration or mixture where relevant.
- Give continuous and peak temperatures, pressure and rod speed.
- Describe the operating environment: dust, washdown, salt spray or hot debris.
- State acceptable leakage, service life target and replacement access.
- Require material traceability and written compatibility confirmation for unusual fluids.
我们的 seal failure guide explains the clues visible after a failure, and our 海洋腐蚀指南 covers another part of the exposed rod system. Final seal selection should be confirmed with the cylinder and seal manufacturers.
