A piston seal controls leakage; a wear ring or guide band helps keep moving metal parts separated under transverse load. Confusing those roles can lead to repeated seal replacement without correcting the cause of scoring or uneven wear.
Follow the side-load path
Machine misalignment, gravity on a long horizontal cylinder and linkage geometry create forces across the piston and rod. Guide elements transfer some of these loads to the cylinder structure while maintaining running clearance. Parker describes nonmetallic wear bands in its cylinder construction and offers bearing materials designed for side-loaded hydraulic duty. Their width, material and clearance must be selected for the actual load and bore, rather than copied from a different cylinder.

- Inspect wear patterns around the circumference, not only at one point.
- Measure rod and bore condition before installing replacement seals.
- Check bearing length, guide spacing and side-load direction through the stroke.
- Review rod-end alignment and external machine guides.
- Use the cylinder maker’s clearance and material limits for repairs.

A thicker or harder guide band is not a cure for a bent rod or poor mounting geometry. It may change clearances and friction without removing the external cause of damage.
