A hydraulic load-holding circuit controls motion during normal operation and certain faults. It does not by itself make it safe to work beneath a suspended gate, platform or machine component. Valves, seals, hoses and connections can fail or be opened during maintenance.

Operational holding and personnel access
A pilot-operated check or counterbalance valve may keep a load from running away during normal operation or a defined hose fault. During maintenance, however, staff may disconnect a hose, remove a pin or disassemble the valve itself. The hydraulic circuit cannot be the sole barrier when the work removes the components that make it hold. Enerpac’s safety guidance calls for physical cribbing before work beneath a lifted load. For permanent machinery, the engineered equivalent may be a prop, locking pin, stand or structural catch.
Enerpac’s cylinder safety guidance advises physically cribbing a load before personnel work under it. For permanent equipment, the form of support may be a structural prop, pin, lock or other engineered device chosen by the machine designer. The maintenance procedure should specify when the support is installed, how its engagement is verified, and how pressure is relieved without transferring an unplanned load. A counterbalance or pilot-operated check valve may remain important for operational control, but its role and its failure response must be documented separately.
The support needs its own load path
A maintenance pin is useful only if the pin, brackets and supporting structure are rated for the likely load and can be positively engaged. Review how the support is installed without placing personnel under an unprotected load. Verify that the cylinder can be unloaded onto the support gradually, so the operator can confirm the load transfer before opening a hydraulic connection. Provide a visible indication of engagement and a way to prevent accidental removal while work is in progress.
An offshore-lift example
During normal lifting, individual cylinder load-control valves may hold a platform when the pump stops. A technician then needs to replace a hose beneath the elevated platform. The service state is different: removing the hose can defeat the hydraulic holding path, and load may redistribute to adjacent cylinders. Install the engineered mechanical rests or locks according to the lift plan, confirm engagement and load transfer, then relieve the local hydraulic pressure through the approved route. A hydraulic schematic and structural support drawing should be reviewed together. Neither a closed valve nor a single pressure reading proves that the work area is safe.
Write the sequence, not just the hardware list
A useful service instruction names the machine position, support device, engagement check, valve state, local pressure measurement and controlled bleed path in order. It also states how the machine returns to hydraulic control after service. A valve datasheet alone does not define this process. The hydraulic designer, machine builder and site operator should approve the sequence together, especially for gates, lifting platforms and crane structures where stored energy remains even after the pump stops.
Checks to put on the drawing or test plan
- Define normal hold, emergency stop and maintenance states on the control narrative.
- Confirm the mechanical support load path and inspection access.
- Test support engagement and pressure release under a controlled procedure.
Failure mode to avoid: Assuming a gauge reading or closed valve alone proves a suspended load cannot move during service.
Information to request before approval
- Machine load cases and structural drawings.
- Hydraulic circuit and valve list.
- Maintenance sequence and access constraints.
