Hydraulic Reservoir Design for Air Release and Clean Oil Supply
Review tank level, return placement, air release and suction arrangement when specifying a hydraulic reservoir.

A hydraulic reservoir does more than hold spare oil. It accommodates changing actuator volume, allows entrained air to escape, provides a place for monitoring and can help reject heat. Poor tank layout can send aerated oil back to the pump even when the nominal volume seems generous.

Separate returning oil from pump suction

The return stream should enter in a way that avoids drawing fresh air and stirring settled contaminants directly into the suction path. Baffles can increase residence time and encourage air separation, but a badly placed baffle can also create fast local flow. Parker’s vane-pump troubleshooting guide lists low oil level, return-line arrangement and poor tank deaeration among causes of air entering a pump. The tank must be designed with its actual flow and machine motion in mind.

Technische Prüfungen

  • Calculate minimum and maximum oil level across cylinder movement.
  • Review return and suction positions at the lowest operating level.
  • Check filling, sampling, draining and cleaning access.
  • Select a breather and sealing approach for the site environment.
  • Confirm pump inlet conditions during cold start and peak flow.

Häufiger Fehler, den es zu vermeiden gilt

Choosing tank volume by a single “litres per minute” rule ignores cylinder volume change, air release and temperature. A compact tank can work, but it needs component-specific analysis.

Angaben, die einer Anfrage beizufügen sind

  • Pump and return flows for each duty phase.
  • Cylinder volume changes and installation attitude.
  • Oil, temperature, contamination and ambient conditions.
  • Maintenance space and monitoring requirements.

Review the reservoir, pump inlet line and filtration as one connected system rather than independent hardware items. For related selection guidance, see our hydraulic pump suction-side checks.
